Irene shares what inspired her to serve, what she’s learned through board leadership, and why supporting public education matters.

Strong schools are built through strong community leadership, and at Lake Washington Schools Foundation (LWSF), dedicated trustees help guide and support the work that makes a difference for students across our district.

In this trustee spotlight, we are featuring LWSF Board President Irene Neumann. Irene has been a passionate advocate for students and public education for many years, bringing both leadership experience and a deep commitment to student wellness, equity, and opportunity. In the conversation below, she shares what inspired her to get involved with LWSF, what she has learned through board service, and why she encourages others to consider becoming a trustee.

What first inspired you to get involved with LWSF?
I had been aware of the programs the foundation supports on behalf of students, in particular Pantry Packs, the library and reading programs, and mental health initiatives, all of which were especially interesting to me. In my personal experience, and at that time as a parent, I didn’t feel there was enough support for students experiencing common mental health challenges such as anxiety. I wanted to help the initiative — which at the time was called Balance In Mind — in its mission to remove the stigma around mental health and bring more robust support into schools.

What made you decide to become a trustee?
Knowing that nonprofit organizations require strong boards, I wanted to offer my services and experience from serving on a number of PTSA and other boards. I feel strongly about doing my part to support public education.

Before joining the board, did you have any hesitations or misconceptions about trustee service?
It’s always a good challenge when joining a new board and organizational culture. However, I knew some of the leaders and also met with the executive director and trustees, who were able to answer my questions and help make me feel welcome. When I first joined, I wasn’t sure where my voice and experience would come to bear, but that sorted itself out quickly.

What has surprised you most about serving as a trustee?
How much I would enjoy the teamwork with other trustees and staff, as well as how quickly I would rise into a leadership role.

Can you share a moment, program, or story that reminded you why this work matters?
Last year, I attended the Battle of the Books final, the district-wide reading competition, and observed students working in teams to answer incredibly detailed questions about the books they had read together. The Foundation fully funds this program, so being able to witness the programs in action made me realize how important this work really is. Watching students strive, learn, grow, and do something bigger than themselves is a tremendous thing to witness.

What do you value most about working alongside other trustees and supporting our schools/community?
The teamwork and the opportunity to work with people from different backgrounds toward common goals. Moreover, I value helping ensure that all students are given equal opportunities to thrive in our schools.

What would you say to someone who is considering applying but isn’t sure they’re qualified?
I would say don’t worry so much about qualifications. Instead, think more about your “why” and the meaningful experiences you have had that are relevant to the work.

Why would you encourage others to apply to become an LWSF trustee?
Because the work is important and very rewarding. Having strong public schools is essential to the health of our communities. If you are looking for a meaningful way to give back and are interested in supporting public schools, this is a great role for you.
