This year’s Back-to-School Supply Drive, led by LWSD in partnership with the Lake Washington Schools Foundation, once again showed the power of coming together to support students and families. Just like how our community stepped up in June to clear lunch debt for graduating seniors, they showed up again, making sure students start the year prepared and ready to learn.
For many families, the rising cost of living on the Eastside makes back-to-school shopping a real challenge. From child care to food, gas, and rent, every dollar counts, and school supplies often fall to the bottom of the list.
“Before this supply drive, families often had to make difficult choices,” shares Na’eemah Webb, LWSD’s Family Engagement and Community Outreach Coordinator. “If it came down to buying food or school supplies, they chose food. If it was between paying rent or purchasing supplies, rent had to come first.”
Thanks to our community’s generosity, thousands of students now have the supplies they need to thrive. Together, donors contributed in so many ways: raising an incredible $15,589 for essential purchases, ordering items through the district’s Amazon Wishlist, and dropping off new school supplies at the Resource Center.
At the Back-to-School Jam on August 23 at Juanita High School’s Fieldhouse, families picked up the supplies they needed to start the year strong. Last year, the Back-to-School Supply Drive supported 550 students, and this year the need has grown exponentially, with 2,280 students pre-registered ahead of the event and many more showing up on the day itself.
The Jam was more than a place to pick up backpacks and supplies — it was a joyful community celebration. Families enjoyed free food, music, bounce houses, and explored resources from local vendors, all designed to make the transition into the new school year a little easier.
Parents have expressed heartfelt thanks for this initiative and the relief it brings. For many, these supplies take one worry off their plate, allowing them to focus on other essentials their children need. Again and again, the same sentiment is shared: deep gratitude for a community that cares and for a program that lightens the load during a stressful time of year.
Because of you, thousands of LWSD students are starting the 2025–2026 school year prepared, confident, and excited. Thank you for helping us make sure no child in our district starts school at a disadvantage. Together, we’re not just filling backpacks — we’re filling hearts with hope.
