A Word From Our President...

The Lake Washington Schools Foundation is looking forward to another exciting year of opportunities to impact students throughout our school district.  Yes, there are challenges we face this year with budget cuts by the State, but it is also an opportunity to make a greater difference in the educational life of kids.  Our mission is to raise money to support academic excellence and success for all students.  We support the District’s mission of every student future ready:  prepared for college, for the global workplace, for personal success.   The Foundation strives to achieve this through funding programs in three areas:  Equal Access to Educational Opportunities, Quality Teaching & Leadership, and Future Ready Skills.

Have you ever wondered how we differ from PTA? Do you think of us as a “District PTA”? Our mission is more academic focused and supportive of the District in achieving student goals, while PTA has an advocacy mission for all children and provides support within individual schools. Foundation programs benefit the District, schools, teachers and students across the District and across school borders.  Like the PTA we are primarily a volunteer organization made up of parents, community, and business leaders.  Because we are a growing organization and seek to keep our overhead costs low, much of the work is done by volunteers and Trustees; we only employ a full time Executive Director and a half time office manager.

We raise money to benefit students in all District schools. The Foundation supports “extending the learning day” through before-, during- and after-school programs, as well as summer programs.  This is an effort to level the playing field and provide extra support to students.  All students are more successful when all come prepared to learn.

We welcome your support through donations or by volunteering.  Thank you to everyone who has contributed thus far. We cannot do what we do without you!

Terri Blier, Board President

LINKSMake a Direct Impact:
Mentor a Child Through LINKS

At-risk students in the Lake Washington School District have proven that they can succeed in school. This cannot be achieved without the help of dedicated volunteers.

LINKS volunteers receive 'on the job' training and supplemental training seminars throughout the school year. Volunteers receive a quarterly newsletter with valuable information they can apply to the work they do in our schools.

Facts About LINKS in 2010-2011

  • Students served - 788
  • Number of volunteers - 158
  • Hours shared - 4399

LINKS volunteer needs are growing in elementary, junior and senior high schools. To learn more about how you can make a difference in a student's ability to succeed, please visit the LINKS web site or call Nanci Wehr at 425-936-1410.

How can you help the Lake Washington Schools Foundation?
Here are several Ways!

The Lake Washington Schools Foundation is working hard to benefit education with supplemental funding for programs in your schools.

You, in turn, can easily contribute in several ways:

Amazon • When purchasing books and other items from Amazon.com, please go through the LWSF portal at www.lwsf.org and click on the Amazon logo. With each purchase, LWSF receives an automatic 7% contribution from Amazon!
United Way • Contribute to the Foundation with a United Way automatic payroll deduction. It’s easy and convenient! For example, LWSF has received nearly $10,000 in just the last two years from LWSD employees giving through United Way. Thank you for considering the Lake Washington Schools Foundation during this year’s United Way campaign.
Give • It’s not too early to do some year-end tax planning. In fact, it will soon be too late! With the end of the calendar year fast approaching, we’re hoping that you’ll consider a year-end, tax-deductible gift in support of the Lake Washington Schools Foundation. Click here for more information on year-end giving and how it can help your tax planning.

2012 - 2013
Reaching for Success Grants

The Reaching for Success Grant program is to encourage creative educational programs that will help a school successfully meet its Continuous Improvement Process (CIP) goals. To accomplish this, the Lake Washington Schools Foundation provides financial resources for specific approaches to enhance or expand the curriculum. These approaches are to be consistent with the District’s priorities and grade level targets, as well as in line with the Lake Washington Schools Foundation mission. Grant applications may propose projects that benefit an individual classroom, a specific grade-level, or an entire school.

Learn more about the Reaching for Success Grants and how to apply.
